The world astounds me sometimes. No, this is not a good thing.
I realize that reading the user comments on places like Amazon.com and IMDB is not a good move. After all, anyone can leave a comment there, and chances are that "anyone" is a complete fucking moron. Case in point:
I'm working on a take-home midterm for my Film and the Holocaust class. One of the films I looked on IMDB for is Triumph of the Spirit. It's 3:30 in the morning, so I of course I can't remember the name of the character Willem Defoe plays. So I went to IMDB to look it up. I also got to read some amazing comments. First comes the appalling ignorance. patpar63@aol.com wants you to know that contrary to a thousand years of history since the Romani (or gypsies) were first forced out of India, gypsies are indeed the same thing as "greek jews". Yeah. Uh huh. Thank you, parpat63. Your comment, "greek jews, aka 'gypsies'", will no doubt stick in my mind for months and will surely haunt me when I lie awake in my bed at night, pondering what could make a man attempt genocide.
Now, that's pretty bad, but check this out. yovivo@pine-net.com describes the plot of Triumph of the Spirit as, "Those rascally Nazis just won't leave the Jews alone". Yeah, that's an excellent summery of the Holocaust. Cue Elmer Fudd: "You wascally Hitwer!" Somehow "rascally" fails to capture the carefully orchestrated murder of millions of innocent people. It's good to see that the Oklahoma education system is fully functional.
