Attention War Protestors at San Francisco State University:
I seriously doubt your convictions. The war with Iraq started last Wednesday. There was no protest on San Francisco State grounds. There was no outcry. There was not a peep. Do you know why? That's because you were all off in the south of France, Tijuana, or hell, someplace like San Jose... drunk.
I realize that this may not be true for each and every last one of you, but it's certainly true for a lot of you. I heard many of you discussing your drunken revelries yesterday when you finally returned from a week of pointless partying.
You can make the argument that the walkout wasn't scheduled for today because school did not resume until today, but this is still ultimately a hollow, sad retort, because despite the fliers and posters advocating a protest on the day the war began, there was nobody here carrying that out last Wednesday.
It took you five days to react. For shame.
Oh yeah, and one other thing. A walkout is a bad idea in general. It is a time of economic recession. The government just cut back a ton of school funding, and at SFSU in particular, they raised a bunch of our fees and axed programs. My high school just killed their stagecraft and musical programs... just in time to open the newly renovated theatre. Unless your rich parents or grandparents are paying for your education, you are paying for it. A walkout is you throwing out your money. It's also a pointless and futile gesture, because the way the government is chopping school budgets, it's clear they don't care about students. If we would all walk out and not come back they would be very happy.
What you do sends a message to the world. However, when you do it is often as important.
Whether I agree with your anti-war convictions or not is immaterial; Now I know they are fair weather convictions. You are war protesters only if it is convenient.
You should be ashamed of yourselves.
